Weather / Cancellation: We monitor the snow and ice conditions of the Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen. We want everyone to have an authentic experience. Please note that the waterfalls do not have to be frozen for us to run the trip. There are a number of factors we consider, such as weather, temperature, the amount of ice and snow on the trail system and the amount and quality of the ice formations on the walls surrounding the waterfalls. If there is insufficient ice or if rain is forecasted for the whole day, we will cancel the trip. A few rain showers won’t keep us away. As for snow, we welcome it, but the presence of snow is not required. A big snow storm, however, could impact our decision. We do our best at monitoring the weather. We will contact you as soon as we think a storm may interfere with a trip. If we cancel a trip, you can reschedule, apply your funds to another trip category or request a refund.
Driving & Lodging Considerations: We understand that many participants are traveling up to 2 hours or more to attend this magnificent trip. As such, we recommend you to consider making lodging arrangements for the evening before your trip. Please also consider lodging arrangements for after the trip as you may be tired. Also, having lodging options is great in the event of inclement weather forecasted for before or after the trip.
Important: On the Monday before your trip, you will receive a detailed email with information on what to expect and bring, exact meeting location, a link to complete an online digital waiver and health form and other pertinent information.
Frozen Waterfall Exploration Hikes
With crampons under your boots and ice axes in hand (all gear provided), join VTS on this magical winter adventure. You will explore the dozens of frozen waterfalls and ice formations throughout the ravines of the majestic Ricketts Glen State Park. We will hike along the Falls Trail and explore the Glens Natural Area, a designated National Natural Landmark, which boasts a series of wild, free-flowing waterfalls, each cascading through rock-strewn cliffs in this ancient hillside. These waterfalls freeze, as do the walls of the cliffs, creating an awe inspiring experience. This trip transports you to a frozen-in-time waterfall wonderland. The guides will set hand-lines at certain sections of the hike as we will be hiking on an ice-packed trail system—it is an incredible experience!

Please note that this is not an ice climbing trip. We will not be climbing up vertical ice, but rather hiking a frozen trail system using crampons, ice axes and other related gear. No prior experience necessary.
