Alicia McCormick

Wilderness Guide, Wilderness First Responder/CPR/AED, American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor, ACA Level 2 River Canoe Instructor, Rock Climbing Assistant, Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker

Alicia grew up in north central Pennsylvania where she enjoyed camping, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking with her family. Through this influence, she attended Penn State University and majored in Wildlife Science. She also credits her involvement in Shaver’s Creek, Penn State’s nature center, in guiding her on her future career path.

Her employment has taken her to summer camps, wilderness programs, and environmental education organizations in the states of Nevada, Massachusetts, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Alicia has co-led 30-day backpacking courses for adjudicated youth and young men in Pennsylvania. As the Trip Director for Camp Nicolet, she guided backpacking, canoeing, and kayaking trips for girls in the wilderness of northern Wisconsin and Michigan. Alicia’s most recent work experience was developing outdoor programs for the Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA.

Alicia received her Master’s in Environmental Education from Slippery Rock University. She had a graduate assistantship with the Macoskey Center, where she designed sustainability-based curriculum. Her seven month journey as an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker from Georgia to Maine in 2011 was the most rewarding, but also the most challenging, expedition Alicia has undertaken thus far.

Alicia will be attending a National Outdoor Leadership School - Educator Course in the Yukon in the summer of 2014. One of her passions is getting more girls and women into the outdoors, where they ultimately develop their self-confidence and connection to the natural world. Some of Alicia’s favorite places to hike include the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Green Mountains of Vermont, and the Wilds of Central Pa.

Fun Fact: Alicia’s Appalachian Trail name is Eureka.
