Born and raised in the heart of West Philadelphia’s concrete playgrounds, Andrew learned the skills necessary to navigate everyday risks and challenges that inner city residents experience on a daily basis. He says that this is where his desire for adventure and risk was born. It was during a month long family trip to Montana that Andrew was first exposed to the available adventure and exciting risks of the great outdoors. After a month of backcountry hiking and camping, exciting river travel and alpine summiting, Andrew was hooked! It has been over 20 years since that trip, and in the interim Andrew has spent countless hours practicing, training, refining and teaching his skills in biking, sailing, windsurfing, climbing, skiing and snowboarding, and being a father. Andrew currently works at Drexel University where he heads the Climbing and Experiential Learning department. On weekends and when not guiding for Valley to Summit, he can most often be heard shouting “off belay” by hikers and spectators watching him as he scales his favorite 5.10’s in the Gunks—his favorite crag in the world, thus far.
